Yunqing Xu's Message

Hello everyone, my name is Yunqing Xu. I’m the Associate Professor at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University in China. I’m also Director for Urban and Environmental Studies University Research Centre. On this special International Women Day, we’d like to celebrate a much safer and more opportunity environment that our women enjoy nowadays. At XJTLU, we have seen an increasing number of women staff and students dedicated to exploring new education model that values creativity and critical thinking. While at the same time, we also observe many other urban challenges that women face, such as the COVID-19 which has brought about a lot of sufferings around the world. Therefore, it is important to both understand what are the impacts of dynamic urban development on women, and what role that women could potentially play in the process of achieving SDG goals.

While entering into a new stage of development in China, which is described as ‘quality growth’, equity and inclusiveness should sit in the very centre of it. Hence at the UES Research Centre, we are devoted to studying how sustainable development paradigms can be best realized at the local level and how the lessons and best practices can be deepened the concepts and brought to international debates. We organized a variety of research projects and exchange activities, including publications and dialogues with global and local opinion leaders to exchange and find solutions. With the experience of many women working in the urban fields, we do realized a potential big role to be played by women in urban planning, policy and design fields. Because it is very much fundamentally about working with people and for the people. Therefore, women with our unique features of soft skills and management capacity, as well as creativity and so on, we’d like work together and create a much better future for all of us to enjoy in a much more complex and challenging tomorrow. Thank you.
