2nd Collingwood World Summit

Towns and small cities represent great opportunities for promoting the 2030 Agenda and moving forward the achievement of the SDGs. Their proximity to larger urban centres and their role as a hub to rural settlements places them in a key position to influence the movement of people, services, and products which in turn can shape a strong economy for an equitable and inclusive society.

The 2nd Collingwood World Summit: Habitat in Towns (The Summit) will bring to the foreground opportunities to examine an integrated approach on the social, economic, cultural and environmental dimensions of sustainability and shared economic prosperity at the scale of towns and small cities. The Summit will focus on the dividends that Towns bring through a balanced spatial development such as planning, sustainable transportation, affordable housing, job creation, a viable economy and more. In doing so, the Summit will look at the strategies required to address constraints on existing capacities and resources. In addition, attention will be paid on how towns and small cities can recover from the impacts of COVID-19 pandemic and provide options for more regenerative development. This will include practical examples, initiatives and approaches to local economic and social development and the mobilization of human and financial resources with community participation.

As host, the Town of Collingwood in collaboration with the Urban Economy Forum, will lead the discussion on the role of towns and small cities in achieving the SDGs, in particular SDG 11:sustainable, resilient, safe, and inclusive communities and cities. In this context, the interrelationship between regional and national development and small and larger settlements will be explored with a view to achieving prosperity and harmony.

Through a consultative process a community and stakeholder survey was conducted to identify the themes to be discussed at the Summit. A general consensus revealed the following themes:
