Aguascalientes Becomes Mexico’s First Frontrunner Province on Urban SDGs

We are thrilled to share the outcome of a productive meeting between Governor María Teresa Jiménez Esquivel of the State of Aguascalientes and Reza Pourvaziry, Chair of the Urban Economy Forum (UEF), at the World Urban Pavilion powered by Daniels in Toronto on February 21, 2025.

This formal gathering culminated in a Letter of Intent (LOI) defining the path for Aguascalientes to become Mexico’s Frontrunner Province on Urban SDGs, solidifying its pledge to advance the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Through this collaboration, UEF and Aguascalientes will jointly develop global pilot projects in:

🌊 Water stewardship & sustainability
🏭 Industrial development & innovation
🏡 Sustainable & social housing

This initiative bolsters Aguascalientes’ leadership within the agenda 2030 Council of Governors in Mexico, laying the groundwork for sustainable urban development, policy innovation, and impactful SDG implementation at both national and international scales.

A key feature of this partnership is the creation of a “Circular Economy Plan” for Aguascalientes, promoting responsible resource use and long-term viability.

By pioneering efforts like Reuso de Agua and Distrito de Riego OO1, Aguascalientes has reduced water extraction by 79% and boosted irrigation efficiency by 90%, setting a global benchmark for sustainable urbanization.

Ultimately, this synergy aims to transform Aguascalientes State into a global reference point for inclusive and climate-resilient development, setting a standard for others to follow.
