Patricia Canelas

Patricia Canelas is a Departmental Lecturer in Sustainable Urban Development at the University of Oxford, and a Fellow of Kellogg College. Previously she has held academic positions at the University College London and University of Reading in the UK, and at Escola Superior de Actividades Imobiliárias and Universidade Católica in Portugal. Patricia is an architect and planner with a PhD in Planning from the Bartlett, UCL, UK, an M.Arch from the University of California, Berkeley, US, a postgraduate degree in Sustainable Urban Development from Universidade Católica and a degree in Architecture from Universidade Lusíada, Portugal. She has worked as an architect and urban planner and continues to work in urban public policy and policy analysis at local and national levels in the UK and Portugal.



Her research and teaching seek to advance knowledge on the forces that shape the unbalanced power dynamics at play in property development and investment. She does this by looking at real estate–finance–state relations. Intellectually, she draws on urban governance, property management and investment, and behavioural theories to develop insights into patterns of development, investment and management, in conjunction with planning practices at the local and national scale.
