THE HIGHLIGHTS OF SECOND UN ENVIRONMENT ASSEMBLY (UNEA) CITIES AND REGIONS SUMMIT
Last week UNEP as part of the UN Enviromnent assembly held its second Cities and Regions Summit on February 23, 2021 under the theme, “Flip the Script: Cities and Nature”.
In her Keynote Speech speech, Maimunah Mohd Sharif, Executive Director, UN-HABITAT, and UN Under-Secretary-General, reiterated the importance of the collective goal to “flip the script” and ensure that cities work for, rather than against, nature. She recognized the need for cities to utilize circular flows and be inclusive to address interconnected and complex challenges. She shared optimism that cities and regions could realize the New Urban Agenda (NUA), which envisions well-planned and well-managed cities as a tool for sustainable development.
